Inspiring stories of real heroes
Be the Change is a decade-long journey of discovering soul-stirring narratives that celebrate the triumph of the human spirit.
The compelling stories in this book are of ordinary citizens who have unleashed the spirit within, with extraordinary consequences, radically changing society for the better. The list includes globally eminent names like Meera Sanyal, Michael Norton, Arun Maira, Bill Drayton and Kumi Naidoo as well as unsung heroes like Lakshman Singh, Thangsingh Chinkholal and many others. Irrespective of their field, these are people who have reached out beyond their own life to help others, to be and to lead the change. Their stories will inspire all of us to recognize our own power to be a champion of change, reinforce the positive in society and leave an imprint on the sands of time.

                                          THE PUBLISHERS’ NOTE

Srimad Ramayana is the very soul of India. The highest ideals of every Indian are enshrined and portrayed in this holy scripture. It is a complete guide to God-realisation, the path to which lies in righteousness.

Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj has, in this invaluable work, given the essence of Srimad Ramayana in a beautiful way. In his characteristic style, he has given the story and the morals in a simple, direct and lucid style.

The lessons of Srimad Ramayana should be engraved on the tablet of everyone’s heart. This is the urgent need of the hour. The evils of Kaliyuga need not make you despair. Where there is Ram, where there is Ram Nam, where there is Ramayana, the evils of Kali dare not enter. Build this spiritual fortress in your own heart; you will live in Rama Rajya. You will enjoy illimitable peace and bliss.

Ramayana must be studied today, more than ever, by everyone. The ideals of man are beautifully portrayed in it. Everyone should emulate those ideals and grow into ideal citizens.

May His Message spread! May God bless you all! May all people walk the path of Dharma! May Lord Rama be enshrined in the hearts of every man, woman and child in this holy land and the world at large!

                                          PRAYER

Sri Rama! I seek no wealth. I seek no honour, nor estate, nor earthly reward. Long years of my life, I have spent in various pursuits. I have not read the Vedas nor the Sastras nor the epics of Valmiki or Vyasa. But I have kept faith in Thy Name, in Thy mercy and kind purpose. I have remained a humble instrument in Thy Hands. Grant me this then, my Lord, that for ever more my love for Thy Lotus Feet may deepen a thousandfold and that I may keep my gaze constantly on Thy Lotus Feet and spend my time in doing Thy will and when I cast off this mortal coil, I shall reach Thy abode from where there is no return.

Bhakta Siromani Sri Hanumanji! Worshipful adorations to you—the greatest and the noblest Sevak of Sri Rama, hero in war and peace, statesman, diplomat, engineer who floated the bridge of stone across the ocean to Lanka, commander and leader of the mighty hill tribes of the South who marched under your command with faith and waged the mighty righteous war, with weapons shaped from trees and stones, achieving undying glory for the Kapi Dhvaja that has since flown aloft on the horizon of India, and proclaiming Sri Rama the greatest emperor of the happiest empire, the world has ever seen. None greater than you Hanumanji, in deeds of valour and devotion to the Lord, has been born on this earth. The tale of your valour and devotion will ever inspire the youth of India to acts of service and sacrifice. Prostrations to you.

Sri Sita Mata! Revered and most loved Mother of India, thou art the embodiment of womanly grace, virtue, chastity and endurance. Women of India worship you as the Goddess Lakshmi and their hearts are filled with reverence and love for your high piety, righteous suffering, chastity, endurance and devotion to the Lord. Mother dear, guide us with kindly light on the way to the abode of my Lord!

Behold, I Shine : Narratives Of Kashmirs Women And Children
                                          Description

Set in the once-fabled land of Kashmir, Behold, I Shine moves beyond male voices and focuses, instead, on what the struggle means for the Valley’s women and children—those whose husbands remain untraceable; whose mothers are half-widows; those who have confronted the wrath of ‘Ikhwanis’, or the scrutiny of men in uniform, and what it means to stand up to it all.

This book also brings to focus the resilience of the Valley’s women and children—of activists like Parveena Ahangar and Anjum Zamrud Habib, who, after debilitating losses, start human rights organizations; of ordinary homemakers like Munawara who have taken on the judiciary; and of a young generation of thinkers like Uzma Falak and Essar Batool who foreground the interaction of gender, politics and religion, and won’t let Kashmir forget.

Stitching together their narratives, Behold, I Shine not only memorializes women’s voices—thus far forgotten, unwritten, suppressed or sidelined—but also celebrates the mighty spirit of the Valley.

                                          17 PRINCIPLES OF SUCCESS

                                          YOU CAN BE DIFFERENT.
YOU CAN DEVELOP YOUR ABILITIES TO THE FULLEST.
BUT ONLY IF YOU ARE MOTIVATED TO PAY THE PRICE.

Every person has a brain and a nervous system and is, therefore, endowed with great mental capacities. Few of them, however, use and develop their natural abilities sufficiently to reach the many goals they could achieve. Most people simply aren’t willing to pay the price: the effort behind learning the art of motivation with a positive mental attitude.

Set high goals. Turn your dreams into reality. Follow the principles in this guide. Just remember, you have unlimited potential. Convert it into power and use it. Become successful and stay that way!

                                          W. Clement Stone and Napoleon Hill came together in 1952 to make a change. Stone added his Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) concept to Hill s principles, resulting in the classic book, Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude. The two men spent the next ten years writing and lecturing about the story of success through PMA. Their formula was to become the foundation for virtually all modern motivational writing.

This major contribution to the study of urban culture, first published in 1990 as the magnificent photographic book Benares Seen from Within, is now issued in a more accessible format, its text substantially revised.
This book is the most inclusive presentation of this extraordinary city ever attempted. It is the fruit of a lifelong interest in Benares from 1953 until the present day by an author well known for his unusual combination of reflective thought, scholarship and poetic sensibility.
Lannoy shows how the populace of Benares lives within a historical environment spanning at least three millennia of continuous habitation. Though now beset with all the characteristic urban ills of the age, it is arguably the oldest living city in the world to retain its original cosmic orientation. A centre of learning since antiquity, its way of life has not essentially changed until the last few years.
The variety and range of themes is remarkable. Lannoy explains the metaphysical substructure of the city orgazised as a microcosm of the universe. He shows how the extremely ancient cults of the pillar and the sun-wheel survive and continue to underpin the society’s ritual calendar in unbroken continuity for millennia, and gives a vivid account of how the Buddha’s life and teaching two thousand five hundred years ago had a profound influence on Benares. The city’s association with Yoga as well as with thriving commerce and weaving, the location of the uniquely central burning ghat — all under the aegis of Shiva and Kala Bhairava — the importance to the city’s economy of the pilgrim trade, are shown here to foster a distinctive blend of spirituality and worldliness.
Lannoy’s survey extends right up to the present, with a searching critique of the city’s troubled history of conflict between Hindus and Muslims, the politicization of the crisis between religion and secularism, and a lively account of leading personalities from Shankara to Kabir and Tulsidas, Gandhi and Anandamayi Ma. Lannoy has pondered deeply over a lifetime the significance of this venerable city, infusing these pages with the sagacity of lived experience.

Richard Lannoy is the author of several books on India, including The Speaking Tree: A Study of Indian Culture and Society, published by Oxford University Press in 1971 and still in print in India. He was on the founding staff of the ICA, London (1950-52), where he set up a celebrated forum, the Independent Group. He became a freelance photographer working for various international magazines, and on assignment for United Nations to the Palestinian refugee camps in Gaza (1952). He became seriously interested in India back in 1947, but began his work there, and particularly in Benares, in 1953, and on several subsequent visits until 1960, returning again in the Eighties, but completing his magnum opus on Benares in 1999. His thinking on Benares has never ceased for close on half a century, despite the infrequency of opportunities to reside there. He lives in Bath, and equally regards his work as author, photographer and painter as ways to advance a holistic view of life.

Fiaz Ahmed Faiz is the most famous contemporary Urdu poet of the twentieth century who appeals both to the common man as well as the elite connoisseurs of poetry. Faiz's ghazals reflect a strong influence of the Persian style and diction, because of which he is often considered the inheritor of the tradition of Ghalib: and at the same time several of them are written in a simple conversational style dealing with the problems of the common man. Faiz was a committed poet who regarded poetry as a vehicle of serious thought rather than just a pleasurable pastime and often used it to champion the cause of socialistic humanism. Born in Sialkot in 1911, Faiz began his career as a lecturer in English but soon turned to journalism where he excelled, rising to the post of editor of The Pakistan Times. In 1951 the Pakistan government sentenced him to four years imprisonment on the charges of complicity in a failed coup attempt known as the Rawalpindi Conspiracy case. While in jail he wrote two of his greatest works, Dasta-e-Saba and Zindan-Nama. During the regime of Zia-ul-Haq he was forced into exile to Beirut. He returned to Pakistan in 1982 and two years later he passed away. This book offers a selection of the best of Faiz's ghazals and nazms along with their English translations as well as transliterations so you can enjoy the beauty and richness of Urdu language as you read the English transliteration while the translation helps you understand the meaning with all its subtle nuances.

Though essentially a romantic poet, steeped in classical Persian and Urdu traditions, who combined the sensitivity and lyricism of the great Urdu poet Meer Taqi Meer and philosophical range and depth of Mirza Ghalib, his poetry also reflected a progressive outlook. He is often compared to Faiz Ahmed Faiz for his simple style of writing because of which he become popular among common readers as well as the connoisseurs of Urdu poetry. Born on January 14, 1931 in Kohat (Pakistan) in a Pushto-speaking family, Faraz started his career as a script writer for Radio Pakistan. Later he moved to academics and also served as the director-general of the Pakistan Academy of Letters. Because of the long spells of dictatorship in Pakistan, Faraz often resorted to symbolism in his poetry to deliberately create an ambiguity so that his lines could be interpreted differently by different people, and mirrored a new kind of ''political sensibility''. Though Faraz wrote in Urdu, he did not hesitate in using Hindi words if they served his poetic purpose for he believed, ''Hindi is close to Urdu, besides it enriches the language''. On 25 August, 2008 at the age of seventy-seven he passed away due to kidney failure. This book offers a selection of the best ghazals and nazms of Faraz Ahmed Faraz translated into English by kuldeep Salil. And to help the reader enjoy the richness and beauty of Urdu language, the original Urdu ghazals are transliterated and presented both in Roman and Devnagri scripts.

Mohammad Iqbal was a poet and political philosopher, known both for his poetry and his ideas that were influential in the creation of Pakistan. Mohammad Iqbal was born in Sialkot, Pubjab in 1877. He graduated from Government College, Lahore, with a master's degree in philosophy and then taught there until 1905. During this period his poetry expressed an ardent nationalism, but a marked change came over his views between 1905 and 1908, while studying for his doctorate at Cambridge University, England, as he was deeply influenced by the philosophies of Nietzsche and Bergson and became extremely critical of Western civilization, which he regarded as decadent. Iqbal turned to Islam for inspiration and rejected nationalism as a disease of the West. He argued that Muslims must find their destiny through a pan-Islamic movement that ignored national boundaries. These ideas found expression in his long peoms 'Asrar-e-Khudi' (The Secrets of the Self) in 1915 and 'Rumuz-e-Bekhudi' (The Mysteries of Selflessness) in 1918, which he wrote in Persian and not Urdu. In his last years Iqbal returned to Urdu as his poetic medium. He died in Lahore on April 21, 1938. This book presents a collection of some of the best nazms and ghazals of Iqbal, along with their English translation as well as transliterations in both Hindi and English so that the readers can enjoy the original beauty of Urdu poetry.

He was highly regarded by his contemporaries and even the later poets, including Ghalib, acknowledged Meer's poetic genius. Meer belonged to the Delhi school of Urdu ghazals. The greatest strength of his poetry is its simplicity and elegant style. The language he used is not intricate or grand but simple and easily understood. It is this simplicity which makes a deep impact on the readers. Meer also used Persian imagery and idiom in his poetry to enhance its beauty. Though Meer tried his hand at various poetic forms, his fame is mainly due to his ghazals which deal with love, especially unrequited love. He has written some of the best Urdu poems on love. His masnavi Mu'amlat-e-Ishq is counted among the greatest love poems in Urdu literature. His personal life influenced the poetry he wrote and the pathos and melancholy in his poetry are due to the tragedies he suffered throughout his life. Meer wrote poetry in Urdu and Persian. His collection of Urdu poems, Kulliat-e-Meer, has six volumes which have 13,585 couplets. Kulliat-e-Farsi is the collection of his poems in Persian language. Meer also wrote his autobiography in Persian called Zikr-e-Meer. This book offers a selection of the best ghazals of Meer Taqi Meer, translated into English by Kuldip Salil. To help you enjoy the richness and flavor of Urdu Language, the original Urdu ghazals are transliterated and presented both in Roman and Devangari scripts.

This charming collection of his prose and drama includes his most evocative works complete with his first and only, novel the Picture of Dorian Gray, a tale of pure beauty and unadulterated decadence.
Also included are his fascinating short stories, like the delightful tale of the Happy Prince and the poignant satire, the Birthday of the Infanta with its much darker overtones. Among his plays are comedies such as Lady Windermere’s Fan and A Woman of No Importance, seemingly trivial but mercilessly exposing Victorian hypocrisies. The book also includes the controversial and macabre tragedy, Salomé which was designed to make his audience shudder by its depiction of unnatural passion.

Through his poetry he lamented the decline of morality in society, discrimination against women, futility of war, and attacked the rise of the self-appointed custodians of religion and power-hungry politicians. Born into a Muslim family on March 8, 1921, his real name was Abdul Hayee and Sahir Ludhianvi was his pen name. Sahir's childhood was marked by the separation of his parents and the unfair treatment of his mother. His first work, a collection of poems in Urdu, Talkhiyan, was published in 1945 when he was just 24 years old. He worked as a journalist and editor in Lahore, editing several Urdu magazines. In 1949 he moved to Mumbai, after the Pakistan government issued arrest warrants for him for making inflammatory and communal statements. Mumbai proved to be lucky for him as his poetic genius was discovered by the Hindi film industry. For three decades he wrote lyrics of Hindi film songs, forming successful partnerships with several music directors. His ego often came in the way of his ability to sustain long term professional relationships and he fell out with people over trivial matters. He died of a cardiac arrest on October 25, 1980 in Mumbai. Sahir Ludhianvi was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1971, and on his 92nd birthday a commemorative stamp was issued in his memory. Best of Sahir offers an English translation of Sahir Ludhinavi's selected ghazals and nazms along with their transliterations in Hindi and English.

Considered by many as the greatest short story writer the world has seen, Anton Chekhov changed the genre itself with his spare, impressionistic depictions of Russian life and the human condition.

From characteristically brief, evocative early pieces such as The Huntsman and his masterpiece A Bet to his best-known stories such as The Lady with the Little Toy Dog and The Requiem, this collection of Chekhov’s remarkable short fiction possesses the unmatched power of art to awe and change the reader.

Put into place through scores of interviews with country's top musicians, dancers and critics, the book traces the growth of an incorrigible kid as he takes on the high and the mighty from the world of arts to emerge as a fearless critic, whose single minded passion in life has been, to serve the arts.

Beyond Destiny ends with a note of caution glancing at the reality of music and dance in India and its survival in the mainstream media. Lada Guruden Singh is a trained broadcast journalist and a poet. He has to be congratulated for this in-depth account of the Life and Times of Subbudu.

If you look, you will find that I never quoted anything but the Upanishads. And of the Upanishads, it is only that one idea, strength. The quintessence of the Vedas and Vedanta and all lies in that one word." Thus Swami Vivekananda.

Written in the form of a dialogue between the youth, Nachiketa, and Yama, the God of Death, this time-honored teaching presents us with a simple, yet profound wisdom.

The compilation juxtaposes what Swamiji said in different contexts with the original verses of the Upanishad. The verses are given in the original Sanskrit, and transliterated, but not translated into English. But through Swami Vivekananda's commentary, the words, as well as the profound thought of the Upanishad, are made known to the reader.

They are based on the actual experiences of Baba's non-corporeal grace regardless of the religion or region of the recipient. The reader will find the volume absorbing both as a collection of short stories and as a portrayal of experiences relating to Baba from the point of view of one person or another.

He was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, hailed as conscious- keeper of the Mahatma. As an ardent freedom-fighter, as Chief Minister of Madras, as Governor of West Bengal, as Home Minister of India and as the first Indian Governor-General of India he rendered yeoman service to the nation and left an indelible impress on our contemporary life.

The Bhavan had the privilege of publishing 18 books (see page ii) by him so far, the copyright of which he gifted to the Bhavan.

In Ramayana and Mahabharata, he has displayed his inimitable flair for story-telling and applying the moral of stories to the needs of modern times.

He was at his best as a short-story writer.

And no better exponent of the ideas contained in it can be found than Rajaji who was indisputably one of the greatest of Indian and who has dared to live strictly according to the precepts of that manual of correct living in the face of the challenges of a rife-torn political and public life.

We inherit in Hindu religion a body of thought which, in the opinion of those best fitted to judge, is the product of the highest efforts of intellect and imagination that ever were turned in that direction. Young men and women of any Western nation, had they inherited our philosophy, would have been as proud of it as of an empire.

Reading these pages, if they find any thought in the text or in the explanation not satisfying, or wanting in clarity, or such as evokes disagreement, they should pursue the matter discussing it with fellow-students or consulting scholars. No Indian can consider himself as having attained a liberal education if he has not a sound knowledge of the principles of the great religious philosophy for which India is famous throughout the civilized world.

The gold was indeed found; not as coined treasure hidden away in a pot but as the reward of toil, a plentiful crop which the garden yielded for the digging. There is nothing in what the writer has himself written, but if the readers are induced to dig, the Gita, our precious patrimony, will yield a rich harvest for the striving soul.

All these may be very useful, but I have not accepted these suggestions, as I intend that this book should continue to be a beginner’s handbook, and I do not wish to aim at making it anything like a book for scholars.

A faithful rendition of the 2000 year old Song Celestial, Bibek Debroys translation resonates with the spirit of the original while using modern idiom and language. He captures, verse by verse, the essence of this ancient philosophical poem which debates eternal questions of right and wrong, action and consequence, and the conflicting nature of duty and love. The text stands by itself, complete and without interpolation, juxtaposed with the Sanskrit for easy reference, interpretation and explanation are tucked away as notes at the end. Authentic and readily accessible to the scholar and the non initiate, this edition of the Gita is essential reading for anybody who wishes to grasp the core of Indian philosophy and religion.

The Gita (in Sanskrit, "Song of the Lord") consists of a dialogue between Lord Krishna and Prince Arjuna on the morning of a climactic battle. Krishna provides Arjuna with the spiritual means to understand his own nature so that he can take action and prevail. However, the larger canvas painted in the poem is that of the moral universe of Hinduism. As translator Eknath Easwaran, one of the world's premier teachers of meditation and spirituality, notes "The Gita does not present a system of philosophy. It offers something to every seeker after God, of whatever temperament, by whatever path. The reason for this universal appeal is that it is basically practical: it is a handbook for self-realization and a guide to action."

Since it fell from the divine lips of Shri Krishna on the field of battle and stilled the surging emotions of his disciple and friend, how many troubled hearts has it quieted and strengthened, how many weary souls has it led to Him! It is meant to lift the aspirant from the lower levels of renunciation, where objects are renounced, to the loftier heights where desires are dead and where the Yogi dwells in calm and ceaseless contemplation, while his body and mind are actively employed in discharging the duties that fall to his lot in life. That the spiritual man need not be a recluse, that union with the divine Life may be achieved and maintained in the midst of worldly affairs, that the obstacles to that union lie not outside us but within us - such is the central lesson of the Bhagavad-Gita.

But, as all the acts of an Avatara are symbolical, we may pass from the outer to the inner planes and see in the fight of Kurukshetra the battlefield of the soul, and, in the sons of Dhritarashtra, enemies it meets in its progress Arjuna becomes the type of the struggling soul of the disciple and Shri Krishna is the Logos of the soul. Thus the teaching of the ancient battlefield gives guidance in all later days and trains the aspiring soul in treading the steep and thorny path that leads to peace. To all such souls in East and West come these divine lessons, for the path is one, though it has many names and all souls seek the same goal, though they many not realize their unity.
