                          DESCRIPTION:

In Illusions, the Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah, Richard Bach met Donald Shimoda, a fellow pilot with the keys to the universe who barnstormed the Midwest in a Travel Air biplane. Part of Shimoda's secret was a small book, bound in what looked like suede: Messiah's Handbook, Reminders for the Advanced Soul. "Open it", he said and whatever you need to know is there. Lost for decades and rediscovered, here it is in print at last reminders for those who have outgrown cynicism and doubt.

                                                                  $21
                                                                  Metatheater and Sanskrit Drama
                                                                  Metatheater and Sanskrit Drama

About the Book In 1963, Lionel Abel's book, Metatheatre: A New of Dramatic Form, was published. The basic idea of metatheater is that of multiple layerof illusion. The prefix meta- here, suggets beyond, above &within. Metatheater, in one of its senses, can be viewed as one make-believe (dramatic) world superimposed upon another make-believe (dramatic) world. Or as one dramatic world framed within another dramatic world. The most easily relationship is theplay-within-the-play.

The question might be asked what relevance such a recent topic of literary criticism in the West would have to a study of ancient Sanskrit drama. Each of the six essays in Part One of this book provides an effective answer.

In the sixth essay, a translation is given of the passage in the Abhinavabharati, wherein Abhinavagupta comments on the term of natyayita. Remarkably, this ancient Sanskrit term is most appropriately translated by the freshly minted English word metatheater. And it is through an understanding of this 30-year-old English term (metatheater) that one is able to obtain a revealing insight into what Abhinava was saying one thousand year ago about natyayita term used in the Natya-Sastra, in the section on Sarira Abhinaya, and illustrated by Abhinava with a reference to Subandhu's play, Vasavadatta Natyadhara The first five essays illustrate how profoundly a knowledge of the metadramatic structure of Sanskrit plays will affect the way in which they are to be understood and translated.

For most people, the mind seems to be an unruly cacophony, attempting to grasp and shape everything which falls in its purview. In mind is your business, Sadhguru explains that only if we make it "our business" to transform this uncoordinated mess into a well - coordinated symphony, will we able to use the mind, rather than be used by it.

In the course of this book, Sadhguru explores the yogic physiology and the many subtle dimensions of the body. It is a first step on an intriguing and exciting journey that culminates in total mastery of the system, allowing us to stay rooted in the physical and yet taste the beyond. Above all, the book is a glimpse of a possibility to live and function in a way that most human beings would consider superhuman.

In ten short works contained in this volume, Tulsi composes verses on themes which evaluate his religious perspectives. Only three of these works are based on the deeds of Rama: In Baravai Ramayana, the rapture of devotion in the Name of Rama is brought out; in Ramalala Nahachhu Tulsi reiterates his faith in the Saguna form of Rama; in Ramajna Prashna, he ostensibly reads omens from the Deeds of Rama but concludes that all welfare depends on the devotion of Rama. Three of the works: Sankata Mochana, Hanuman Bahuka and Hanuman Chalisa are dedicated to Sri Hanuman. Tulsi's avowed principle was 'greater than Lord, the Lord's devotee take to be.' In the long poem Janaki Mangal Tulsi sings of the wedding ceremony of adi-shakti Sita to Rama. In Parvati Mangal, he departs from the story of Rama and sings on the wedding ceremony of adarsha-nari Parvati to Lord Shiva. In Vairagya Sandipini Tulsi observes that vairagya is not renunciation of the worldly duties but of Ego and bonds of 'I and mine.' Krishna Gitavali is a work totally unconnected with the story of Rama, the only common link between them being the supremacy of devotion and bhakti which is the reason for this work finding place in this anthology. Mira Bai belonged to the royal family of the Ranas of Mewara and was a staunch devotee of Krishna, worshipping him in the madhurya bhava of Vaishnavism. In the earlier part of her life she was ill-treated by her brother-in-law who even tried various means to kill her, but Krishna was ever her protector. Fed up, she went away to Merata, her maternal home and from there to Vrindavana and then to Dvaraka, where, according to traditional belief, she merged with the image of Krishna.

Miras verses have a musical ring and a number of them have been recorded on discs and cassettes. There have been many recensions of her padas. This English verse translation of eighty-one of them aims at giving the best of these.

It is hoped that Miras verses, along with the detailed introduction giving her life and times and her art, will create renewed interest in this renowned saint-poet.

Lord Krishna is one of the most endearing deities of India mythology and is considered to be one of the ten avatars of lord Vishnu. The cult of Krishna is popular all over India. He is, at time, the simple cowherd indulging the milkmaids in playful banter. At other times, he is the supreme intellectual – expounding philosophy of the Gita. Krishna’s beguiling childish pranks and his dignified wisdom have, in turn, influenced the Hindu consciousness for centuries.

But he is perhaps the most popular as Krishna, the divine lover, playing his celestial flute on the moonlit banks of river Yamuna. And it is this form of Krishna that has come to us through the devotional lyrics of Mirabai.

There is no dearth of mystics in India. But among them Mirabai is unique. She was born a princess, and become a queen through marriage. Yet she chose to abide only in the kingdom of Krishna, unswerving in her immutable faith and devotion. Uncharitable relatives and doubting friends could not hinder her devotion. She had given herself to Krishna – she belonged to him completely.

The sweetness and passion of Mirabai’s songs in praise of Krishna made them popular all over the land. Even today, her lyrics remain a rich heritage of mystic poetry in India the story of Mira as narrated in this book is based on legend rather than on historical facts.

Born a princess in Rajasthan in 1498, Mira (as she is more commonly known) eschewed the marriage her royal family had arranged for her, celebrating instead her right to independence and intense devotion to Krishna in both her life and poetry. In this collection, two acclaimed poets, Robert Bly and Jane Hirshfield, have created lively English versions of Mirabai’s poems, using fresh images and energetic rhythms to make them accessible to modern readers.

In a most comprehensive and thorough analysis, the present work identifies Mithuna or Male-Female theme as a symbol pure and simple that occurs and recurs under many contexts and representational assumptions in different phases of Indian culture, art and thought. The author has brought out an exposition of the Mithuna symbol treating fully its implications in manifold contexts and areas of thought such as One And The Many, Male and Female, As An Idyllic Concept, Dampati, Incomplete Mithuna, Eternal Mithuna And Sahaja. As such this symbol now forms the key to analysing several basic ideals permeating different Indian metaphysical systems and mythical formulations as well as their tangible projection in art and iconography through the ages. The accented expression of Mithuna in Indian art and ritual has ever been a thing of wide interest both to scholars and general readers. Dr. Agrawala's work studies this greatly fascinating subject in a new and comprehensive setting, treating the Indian Male-Female theme for the first time in the widest possible range of its existence from prehistoric ages to pre-modern times and of its multiple presence in religious, social and philosophical ideologies and art.
