The Authors
Devendra Handa is the recipient of Sir Mortimer Wheeler Prize, Maulana Azad and Archaeological Centenary Memorial medals (1964), Lowick Memorial Grant of the Royal Numismatic Society, London (1992 and 2007), Pandit Bhagwanlal Indraji Medal of the Indian Coin Society (2007) and Nelson Wright Medal of the Numismatic Society of India (2010). He was felicitated with Life-time Achievement Award by the NSI and Indian Coin Society in 2008 at Indore and has recently been honoured with Karmayogi Samman by the Haryana Institute of Fine Arts (2012). After his retirement from the Panjab University, Chandigarh he enjoyed Fellowship of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla (2000-03), Senior Fellowship (Numismatics) of the Ministry of Culture, GOI, New Delhi (2003-05) and Senior Academic Fellowship of the ICHR, New Delhi (2009-11). Dr. Major M.K. Gupta, a medical practitioner by profession, served the Indian army during 1972-99. He is an avid collector and a collection of dated coins of each of the six hundred years from AH 818 earned him a place in the Limca Book of Records in 2004. He has a very vast collection not only of coins which range from the earliest to the present day ones but also of all sorts of antiques and curios which include 1500 seals and sealings from fourth to nineteenth century in Prakrit, Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu, English and Panjabi languages written in Brahmi, Persian, Arabic, Roman, Devanagari and Gurumukhi scripts. A collection of about 120 coin-dies and nearly 600 images of Ganesh in various metals and stones are his proud possessions. He has been exhibiting his coins and other objects at various places and has won many awards including a gold medal of the Oriental Numismatic Society of London in International Coin Exhibition held at Nagpur in 1990. ओमप्रकाश वाल्मीकि भारतीय दलित साहित्य के सबसे बड़े हस्ताक्षर हैं। उनकी आत्मकथा, जूठन, जिसमें उन्होंने जातीय अपमान और उत्पीड़न के कई अनछुए सामाजिक पहलुओं पर रोशनी डाली है, दलित साहित्य में मील का पत्थर मानी जाती है। 30 जून 1950 में उत्तर प्रदेश में जन्मे वाल्मीकि ने एम.ए. तक शिक्षा प्राप्त की जिसके दौरान उन्हें आर्थिक, सामाजिक और मानसिक उत्पीड़न झेलना पड़ा। 1993 में उन्हें डा. अम्बेडकर पुरस्कार, 1995 में परिवेश सम्मान और साहित्य भूषण पुरस्कार से अलंकृत किया गया। अपनी दलित अस्मिता के आग्रह के बावजूद ओमप्रकाश वाल्मीकि के लेखन की व्यापक और गहरी चिंताएँ हैं और इसी कारण, देश, धर्म, जाति और विमर्श पर इस पुस्तक में प्रस्तुत उनके विचार आज भी अत्यंत महत्त्वपूर्ण और सामयिक हैं। 2012 में जब वे दिल्ली के गंगाराम अस्पताल में कैंसर का उपचार ले रहे थे तब उनकी देखभाल कर रहे युवा लेखक और दलित साहित्य के शोधार्थी भंवरलाल मीणा ने उनसे लम्बी बातचीत की। इस अंतिम बातचीत में जहाँ अनेक आत्मस्वीकार हैं, वहीं दलित दृष्टि का पुनराविष्कार भी है। यह संवाद इस मायने में अद्वितीय है कि मृत्यु को एकदम नज़दीक से देख रहे लेखक ने जीवन में अपने अनुभवों का अंतिम सार प्रस्तुत कर दिया है। 2013 को ओमप्रकाश वाल्मीकि का देहान्त हो गया। राजस्थान के आदिवासी क्षेत्र में अध्यापन कर रहे भंवरलाल मीणा साहित्य और विमर्श के अध्येता हैं। आदिवासी लोकगीतों पर आपकी एक पुस्तक प्रकाशित हुई है और लघु पत्रिका बनास जन से भी जुड़े हैं।
The Manuscript (Ms.) of these lectures-a veritable treasure to cherish had remained lost to the world of scholars for the long period of fifteen years. It beard the title ""Four Lectures on the Meaning of the Mahabharata."" This rather heavy-looking title has been abridged here in publication into the substantial title ""On the Meaning of the Mahabharata."" In a great many places, sentences or paragraphs have been placed in rectangular brackets in pencil. This bracketed material has been retained in the body of this book. Secondly, an alternative word or phrase is occasionally found written with a pencil in the margin along with an underscoring of the relevant word or words in the text. It is thought advisable to retain the text of the script as it stands, leaving such marginal alternatives alone. However, there is one exception: Dr. Sukthankar had rewritten in pencil almost a whole para at the end of the third lecture. This pencil-script is incorporated in the body of the book. A facsimile of this page is reproduced as the frontispiece. An English rendering of the German quotation from OLDENBERG is given in an Appendix for the convenience of the general reader. In Index I Sanskrit quotations are printed in Devanagari for the benefit of those not quite conversant with the transiliteration."

Kishore Arun Desai is an Officer on Special Duty at NITI Aayog with Bibek Debroy. He has, along with Debroy, co-authored analytical policy papers on subjects such as simultaneous elections and changing India’s financial year.
